Name Registration
How do I register my domain name?
To register any of the latest top level domain names -- .com,
.net,org, .biz, .info, and more, simply enter your desired domain
name into our domain search box located on the Domain
registration page, and click go.
Does V2WEB handle all types of domain registration?
Yes. V2WEB registers domains through our accredited domain name
registrar, DirectI. For country code domains, we submit your application
to the appropriate country registrar.
I
picked out a domain name. How can I find out if it is available?
You can quickly check to see if a domain name is available at
www.lockurdomain.com. Locate the Domain Availability box in the
upper left corner of the site, type the domain name you are interested
in, including the extension, and then click Go. Lockurdomain will
search to see if that name is currently available. If the domain
name is already registered, you may want to try variations of
the name.
What does it cost to register my domain name?
The costs for registering your domain vary depending upon your
plan and the domain name extension. For detailed information,
visit www.v2webltd.com.
How long will it take to transfer my domain name to V2WEB ?
Typically the transfer should be completed within about 48 to
72 hours. You may want to check with your registrar to see exactly
how long it should take to complete the transfer.
What
is propagation?
When visitors type your domain name into their Web browsers, their
request is referred to a name server that indicates the physical
location (the IP address) of your domain on the Internet. When
your site location changes to a new IP address, or when you deploy
a new site with a new domain name, name servers around the world
must be notified of the change. This process of notification is
referred to as propagation.
Propagation typically takes 48 to 72 hours. During this time,
if you are transferring your domain, some name servers will still
refer to your site's old location while name servers that have
already been notified of the change will refer to the new location.
As a result, visitors accessing your site may be directed to either
the old or new location, depending upon which name server they
connect to. If some visitors are still being directed to your
old site location after 72 hours have elapsed, you should contact
your previous Internet Presence Provider and request that they
update their DNS and delete your domain from their servers. Once
this has been done, and this change has been completely propagated,
the transfer to your new location will be complete.
If your site is new, your site may not be recognized by all name
servers until the propagation period has completed. During the
propagation period, you will need to use your Temporary URL to
upload files and view your site. You can find your temporary URL
by logging in to Site Control.
How
can I avoid downtime while I wait for the new information to propagate
throughout the Internet?
While waiting for the new name server information to propagate
throughout the Internet, we recommend maintaining your site at
your current host to avoid down time for your site. During this
time, you can use the temporary Web address (URL) that we gave
you to mirror your Web site on V2WEB's servers until the transfer
is complete.
My
site is not showing up when I type in my domain name. What's wrong?
If you have recently set up your account, this probably means
that your domain name has not been propagated to all of the possible
domain name servers.
Test your domain by typing your temporary Web address in a Web
browser. If you can access your site using the temporary Web address
(URL), wait a day or two for the propagation period to complete.
If after 72 hours the domain name still does not resolve correctly,
contact V2WEB support at support@v2webltd.com. You should also
check that you have given your home page a valid file name (such
as index.htm or default.htm) and that you uploaded the files to
the correct directory. For more information on these types of
problems, see the Publishing Your Web Site FAQ.
Do
you offer a "web site coming soon" page?
When you register or transfer a domain, and park it on our servers,
you receive a free parking page indicating the domain is reserved
and a web site is coming soon.
I
already have a domain with another registrar but would like to
host with V2WEB. What do I need to do?
Your Domain Name Servers (DNS) currently point to your registrar's
server. They need to point to V2WEB's servers for your hosting
account to be set up. We will contact you by e-mail with instructions
on how to transfer your DNS once you've ordered your hosting package.
Can
multiple domains point to the same HTML files?
Yes. You can forward multiple domains to your web address.
What
is ICANN ?
Formed in October 1998, the Internet Corporation for Assigned
Names and Numbers (ICANN) is a non-profit, private sector corporation
recognized by the U.S. government as the entity to coordinate
the technical management of the Internet's domain name system,
the allocation of IP addresses, the assignment of protocol parameters,
and the management of the root server system. ICANN is located
at http://www.ICANN.org.
What
is a registry?
A registry creates and maintains the database of domain names
for a given top-level domain. It receives domain name system (DNS)
information from domain name registrars, inserts that information
into a centralized database and publishes the information in zone
files on the Internet so that domain names can be found by users
around the world via the Web and e-mail.
Can
I access my domain address with or without the "www"?
Yes, you can access the domain with or without “www”.
How
long does a domain name registration last for?
Generally, a domain name can be booked for One Year.
Are
there any hidden costs for the domain name and Web Hosting?
No. There is no hidden cost for domain name registration and web
hosting.
Web Hosting
Should
I use a Linux or Windows (Windows 2000/2003) based server?
The type of server you need for your site depends on
what type of site you have. If you have a basic website with no
database or dynamic components, then the server type usually does
not matter. If you have a more complex website, or an e commerce
website that has database functions, then the server type will
depend on what technologies your website will be using, such as
ASP, .NET, PHP, Perl, and what type of database it will use.
What
if my hosting requirements are more than your standard packages?
We will customize our hosting plan in order to suit your requirements.
Do
you have support for SSL (Shared Secure Server)?
Yes, we have support for SSL.
Where
is your datacenter located?
V2WEB offers Shared/Dedicated Web Hosting Solutions on
Linux and Windows platforms. We are associated with Nocster (Pennsylvania
Based Company) and The Planet (Texas Based Company).
What
is your backup plan on the servers?
We provide daily/weekly backup support.
What
are your server monitoring plans?
Do you
provide tech-support?
Our technical team provides 24/7 email and telephonic
support.
Is
there a limit to how much data transfer I get per month?
Does
your service employ any procedures to minimize or eliminate the
risk of unauthorized hacking into our servers?
Do
you support FrontPage 2002 server extensions, PHP and CGI-Scripts?
Yes, we support FrontPage 2002 server extensions, PHP and CGI-Scripts
EMAIL
What
is a POP3 email account?
POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3) is a protocol used for downloading
email messages from an email server to your computer. With a POP3
email account, all of the email messages sent to your email address
are stored on a POP3 mail server until you log on to the server
and download the messages.
V2WEB provides at least one POP3 email account with every hosting
plan, where you download your messages from the server or you
can use a traditional email client such as Microsoft® Outlook®,
Eudora® or Netscape® Communicator.
What
is spam and how well does your spam filtering service work?
Spam is the term used for mass, unsolicited emails. Usually these
are promotions or advertisements sent in "bulk" to the
email addresses of people who have not requested this information.
V2WEB strictly prohibits sending spam from any email address on
our mail servers or advertising your Web site in other company's
spam mail. For more information on our policy, visit www.v2webltd.com.
What
is SMTP?
SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is a protocol for sending
email messages across the Internet. It is used in conjunction
with both POP3 and IMAP, protocols that enable you to download
messages from a mail server to your computer. SMTP is used for
outgoing mail while POP3 and IMAP are used for incoming mail.
V2WEB does not support IMAP. If you want to use an email client
such as Microsoft Outlook or Netscape Communicator to send email
messages, you will need to configure the client so that it connects
to the correct SMTP mail server each time you send mail.
What
is email forwarding?
Email forwarding is a way for you to have email messages that
are sent to one address automatically forwarded to a different
address. For example, your customers may send all of their requests
for information to the email address info@yourdomain.com. You
could set up your email so that all of the messages sent to that
address are automatically forwarded to your personal email account
at yourname@abc.com. V2WEB provides unlimited use of email forwarding.
You can set up different forwarding addresses.
What is an email alias?
An email alias is a "virtual" email account. It enables
you to use an email address that doesn't really exist and have
all the messages sent to that address routed to a real email account.
For example, you may want to provide a link on your Web site that
enables visitors to send email to the Web Master, who is really
you. You can use the email alias webmaster@yourdomain.com but
have the email routed to your real email account. V2WEB enables
you to set up an unlimited number of email aliases.
What
is an Autoresponder?
An email autoresponder sends an automated email response to each
incoming message that is sent to a specific address. For example,
a potential customer may send an email to sales@yourdomain.com
asking for more information about some of your products. You can
have the autoresponder send a prewritten message back to the customer
thanking them for their interest and letting them know that a
sales representative will be contacting them shortly. This feature
helps you to improve your company's image, as your customers will
know right away that you have received their email and that you
are responsive to their needs.
V2WEB enables you to set up an autoresponder for each of your
email accounts.
I
need to have email accounts for the different people in my company.
Ho many mail boxes can I set up?
The number of different email accounts you can set up depends
upon your hosting plan.
How
do I set up my email account? What information do I need?
When you first activate your V2WEB account, one default email
account is already set up for you. Usually, this will be in the
format domainname@domainname.com. This email account is associated
with your. Master User account, and you will use your Master User
account password to access this account's mail. If your plan includes
multiple email accounts, you can set these up as well.
I
want to send my customers information on a regular basis. Can
I set up a mailing list?
Yes. V2WEB offers a mailing tool that enables you to create and
manage mailing lists.
How
do I change my email password?
You can change your email password in control panel. Click the
Manage. Accounts link and then click the Change Password link
next to your account. The next time you check your mail, you will
use the new password. If you are using an email client such as
Microsoft Outlook or Netscape Communicator, be sure you make the
necessary changes to your connection information. If you change
the password for your Master User account, remember that you use
the same password to connect to the Web server and transfer files,
so be sure to change the password in your FTP client or in Microsoft
FrontPage. Change password from Site Management for your account.
How
do I check my mail?
You can check your mail using a traditional email client such
as Microsoft Outlook or Netscape Navigator or by using V2WEB's
Web-based email application, Webmail. Webmail enables you to check
your email using your Web browser from any location as long as
you have access to the Internet. One of the advantages of Webmail
is that you can use Webmail and traditional email clients such
as Outlook to check the same email account. So, when you're in
the office you can use your favorite email application, but when
you're traveling you can just log in to Webmail. To use Webmail,
simply point your browser to http://domainname/webmail and then
log in using your email address and password.
If you want to use another email client you will have to configure
it so that it can connect to the mail server. You will need to
know your incoming (POP3) server name, your outgoing (SMTP) server
name and your user name and password.
Is
there a limit to the number of messages I can have in my mail
box?
Your each mail box by default on the server can hold up to 5 MB
but that can be manipulated. This includes both your messages
and any attachments. Once you download your email to your computer,
these messages are no longer in your mail box on the mail server
and are not counted toward the 10 MB limit.
What
is a catchall account?
A "catchall" account is an account that will
catch any e-mail that's sent to a non-existing account under your
domain. Instead of bouncing the e-mail back to the sender, it'll
store the e-mail into the account that's assigned as the catchall
account.

Web
Hosting Features
Web hosting companies try and fit as many features as they can
onto their homepages to try and get the attention of a potential
customer who knows what he is looking for: 1000mb web space, 2Gb
monthly bandwidth, SSH, SSL, ASP, PHP, sub domains………….
The list goes on. But what exactly are each of these features?
In this article, I aim to explain almost every aspect of web hosting
features, from scripting to bandwidth.
Bandwidth
The first thing when looking at purchasing a web hosting account
is how much bandwidth they give you. For every file that is transferred
from your site, it takes up a small amount of bandwidth. If the
file is 1Mb is size, it will take up 1Mb of your bandwidth. This
is usually given in Gb, or Mb (1024Mb = 1Gb) but you should look
for at least 2Gb of monthly bandwidth. If you go over this in
a month, the company will charge you extra usually per Gb or Mb.
However, make sure they allow you to go over by around 500Mb because
you might get a good month and go over slightly. Finally, ensure
they do not suspend you account if you go over. This is also known
as data transfer.
Diskspace
Self, explanatory – this is the amount of space you have
on their server to store your files. This is usually given in
Mb. The company may bombard you with the space in the hundreds
or thousands of Mb, but you actually don’t need that much.
The Olate site is only 4.7Mb! Look for around 100 – 500Mb
as a minimum. Again, as with bandwidth, if you go over then they
will charge you – usually though, you can’t go over
and they will warn you when you are approaching your limit. You
can then buy additional space. Also known as web space.
Control
Panel
This is a must with all accounts as it allows you to manage your
website – setup e-mail addresses, manage the database etc.
Many hosts will provide a demo of their control panel for you
to see. It should be fast and easy to use.
Windows
Hosting
This is where your account is located on a Microsoft Windows server
allowing you to use ASP, .NET, Access Databases among other things.
The usual web server is IIS5.
Unix/Linux Hosting
This is where your account is located on an open source Linux
or Unix server, commonly Red Hat Linux allowing you to use PHP,
SSH and MySQL. The usual web server is Apache.
Domain
Name
This is an essential part of hosting – having your own domain
name (like olate.com) that points to your disk space. Some companies
will allow you to register the domain with them, although it is
usually cheaper to do it via an independent registrar and then
transfer it in to them. Beware of free domain names as the company
may actually own your domain. Always ensure it is registered in
your name and also find out what happens if you want to leave
them and if they charge to move the domain away. Don’t go
with a host that does charge.
FTP
FTP allows you to move files from your PC to your web space so
they can be displayed to the users. This is an essential feature
and must be available 24/7.
POP3 E-Mail Accounts
These are individual mailboxes that messages are delivered to
and each have their individual username and password. You can
then give an address to each staff member – contact@domain,
sales@domain etc. You should expect at least 10 of these, although
the more the better. You may have to pay for additional boxes.
Also known as mailboxes.
SMTP Server
POP3 is only any incoming mail system. If you want to be able
to send messages via your account without using your ISPs mail
server, then you will need an SMTP server. Some hosts do not provide
this and you may have to ask them if you really need one, although
your ISP should provide you with one.
Catch
All E-Mail Account
If an e-mail is set to sles@domain when it should have gone to
sales@domain, then usually it will be returned to the sender with
an error. However, if you have a catch all account setup, then
the message will be sent to that instead, which can be forwarded
to your own address. That way you catch any e-mails sent to the
wrong addresses.
Aliases/Forwarder
These allow you to set up an address@yourdomain which goes to
a different address. If you have your own personal address, for
example, that you wish to use but want an address@yourdomain then
you can set up an alias to forward any e-mails sent to it, to
a certain address.
Auto
Responder
When an e-mail is sent to an address with an auto responder setup
on it, a message of your choice will be sent to the sender in
response. This could be a thank you message for their order, or
a message to say you will respond within 24 hours, for example.
Webmail
This will allow you to check your e-mail accounts from any internet
enabled machine with a Hotmail like interface.
Scripting - CGI/CGI Bin
If you want to use CGI scripts on your account such as CGI message
boards or guestbooks, then you will need CGI support.
Scripting – ASP
This will allow you to use the Microsoft Active Server Pages technology
on your account. This is usually only available on Windows servers.
It allows dynamic and interactive websites.
Scripting
– PHP
The alternative to ASP is the open source PHP technology which
is usually available on Unix/Linux servers only, although it is
possible to use on Windows. It allows dynamic and interactive
websites.
Scripting
- .NET
Microsoft’s latest interactive website technology –
provides an upgrade for many of the languages including C++ >
C#, VB > VB.NET and ASP > ASP.NET.
Scripting
– Coldfusion
ColdFusion is a set of Web development products developed by Allaire,
which merged with Macromedia a while ago. The ColdFusion development
environment makes it easy for you to build dynamic Web sites and
Internet applications.
Database – Access
Used usually with ASP, a small database solution for websites.
However, it only supports up to 50 simultaneous users and is therefore
no good for large sites.
Database
– MSSQL
The next step up from Access – very flexible and reliable
database solution. Ideal for large websites to replace an Access
database.
Database
– MySQL
The open source alternative to MSSQL used usually in conjunction
with PHP.
WAP/WML
Support
Allows you to create pages for WAP on mobile phones and serve
them on your account.
Media Streaming (Real Media/Windows Media):
Provide live music and video streamed from your website. This
usually takes up a large amount of bandwidth.
SSL
Provides 128bit secure connection between the browser and the
server making sure all data is transmitted securely with no chance
of interception. Creates the small padlock in the bottom of the
browser.
Raw
Log Files
Allows you to download the log files from your site to analyze
them with your own tools. This is useful for tracking errors,
but use the stats package the host provides which will be easier
and sometimes more in depth.
Website
Statistics
A web based system that will monitor your site to see where visitors
are coming from, how long they spend on your site, what search
engines they used, etc.
Custom
Error Pages
When the visitor gets an error, it will display the page of your
choice allowing you to direct them to another page of your site
and report the error preventing them from seeing just a blank
error.
Those are the most common features you’ll find advertised
from a host. If you spot something you don’t understand
not listed here, let us know and we’ll add it!
